Too-tight Zone (cue the Twilight Zone music)
The big romance writers' conference is a less than two weeks away, and like I do every year, I pull out my "work" clothes from the back of the closet. I have no idea how it happens, but every July I realize those 3-5 pounds that don't look like a huge deal on the scale are a huge deal when it comes to fitting my butt in my dress pants. Sure, I could buy a larger size, but since these clothes are some of the most expensive in my wardrobe, I'm thinking of other solutions:
1. Dieting: pro--I could probably drop a pound or two by then if I give up eating everything fun. Including toast. Con--with my first conference meal those pounds will return instantly and will bring friends with them.
2. Increase my time on the elliptical from 30 already grueling minutes to an hour of huffing, puffing and complaining. Pro--my body will be more toned and therefore trimmer even if I don't lose weight. Con--I might blow out my kneecaps with all that elipticalling.
3. Try Spanx to sardine myself into the clothes. Pro: my clothes will instantly fit. Con: Not only will have have to become a contortionist to shimmy on a Spanx, I'll need help peeling it off.
4. Going as is and hoping my extra curves will be perceived as a fashion statement. Pro: no work required. Con: Hmmm, I can't think of one, which makes this one the winner.
So, what do you do to shed a few pounds, or are you at the point in your life when you say--forget-about-it?

Free Book for a Great Title Suggestion
I know I'm weird, but I have to have a title before I can really get into writing the book. At the moment, I'm stuck. I have the story idea, but I can't for the life of me come up with a title that will get the old muse flowing.
Short story blurb: Two strangers make eye contact in a crowded airport. She's already waiting in line ready to board her plane. The instant connection between them is amazing as he walks on by her gate. He stops, turns around and starts hurrying back in her direction, but she's already disappearing down the tunnel thingy to the plane. They're in Chicago and her plane is going to Dallas, so he takes a chance and takes out a personal ad in both cities saying: If you are the blonde wearing the red dress that I saw in the Chicago airport on your way to Dallas on Thursday, July 17th (or whatever) and you're single, please contact me, yada, yada.
All I can come up with is "Missed Connections" - but that really isn't working for me.
Title help, anyone?
Give me a great title suggestion that "clicks" the old brain into action, and I'll send you a free copy of my romantic comedy "Mr. Destiny" - about a woman who is two months away from marrying who she thinks is her Mr. Right, when her Mr. Destiny shows up instead.
I'll post the winner's name on Sunday, July 20th.

Watching "Bleak House"

Recently I watched the BBC adaptation of "Bleak House," a 15-episode version of Charles Dickens's novel.
This was quite a time commitment, so my friends and I watched several episodes a night over the course of a week. If you have the time, this production is well worth watching.
There's a little bit of everything in "Bleak House." Basically it's the story of a long-running chancery case (probate for Americans) called Jarndyce v. Jarndyce. There's money in the Jarndyce estate - multiple wills - numerous lawyers. Will the case ever be settled and the estate distributed?
"Bleak House" is partly the story of how the expectation of wealth affects two of the claimants, Richard and Ada. But it's also the story of Lady Deadlock, who has a secret in her past...John Jarndyce, an upright older man who's in love with his ward, Esther...the evil lawyer, Tulkinghorn...and Inspector Bucket, who solves a murder mystery toward the end of the story.
As is usual with Dickens, the story is packed with memorable characters and interesting plot twists. I was impressed with the acting. The casting was remarkable. I know I'll always envision these characters as looking just the way they did in this production.
I'm looking forward to tackling the novel.

Hellion Pleasure - GOAL!
When I hear the word Goal! I think of the soccer games on the sports channels. That one word--GOAL!--for a soccer team means a time to celebrate. For me, it's not until I accomplish that goal that I get to celebrate.
The first half of the year, I spent in stress mode because I was traveling every two to three weeks and I couldn't get my mind wrapped around my stories enough to stay focused. But last week, I was back in the game! I set my goal to write through Chapter 5 of my Work in Progress, my March 2009 Harlequin Intrigue BABY BLING (Cute title, right? ;-)) I leave for Dallas today so I wanted to get a good start on the book. I only had one chapter written before last Monday.
As of yesterday, I'm halfway through Chapter 7 and hope to finish 7 before I leave this afternoon for Dallas! I'd say that's reason to celebrate! Now you can say it for me... GOAL!
